The battle for our social media hearts and minds, or at least our marketing budget, went up a notch last week when Google announced that they will soon be indexing the content of Google Plus (Google +) pages.

Why is this so important?

Well Google and your search ranking are still all important when it comes to attracting new customers or visitors to your website.

Google's announcement means that you can get a Google Ranking or SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) boost from the content that you post on your Google Plus Business Page.

This will give Google Plus a major shot in the arm as take up to the new service (launched last June) has been sluggish - although Google announced this week that Google Plus now has 90 Million users world wide.

Why are Facebook and Twitter so upset about it?

Google claim that indexing the volume of posts on Facebook & Twitter would be virtually impossible, as there are so many shares, likes and tweets per day.

I can't help feeling that the answer is a little more cynical or competitive then that, there is a big rivalry growing between these companies and they're all after a piece of your marketing budget. For Google to index Twitter and Facebook would be to hand their rivals a major competitive adnavtage.

With that in mind, I'd be very surprised if their stance changes any time soon. This also means that companies who have revenue generating websites, or sites where Search Engine Optimisation is important, need to get setup on Google Plus and start managing their account with some well chosen content!
